Finally, a word game that spells it the British way

Most word guessing games are built on an American word list, so a British player who types COLOUR, METRE or CHEQUE gets a shake of the tiles and "not in word list." On this page the game uses a British English dictionary. Answers can be words like colour, fibre, plough, storey or aeroplane, and they are never spelled the American way.

The list comes from SCOWL's British English word lists, the ones behind many British spell checkers, with 2,034 five-letter answers. Guesses are generous: both -ise and Oxford -ize spellings are accepted, and so are American spellings, so you never lose a turn over a Z.

What changes, and what does not

• -our words: colour, favour, honour, humour, labour, rumour, vapour, neighbour.
• -re words: centre, fibre, litre, metre, sabre, sombre, theatre, kilometre.
• -ise words: realise, organise, apologise, recognise. Answers use -ise; -ize still counts as a guess.
• And more: cheque, tyre, grey, mould, plough, jewellery, manoeuvre, moustache, programme.

Everything else works exactly as on the main site: a new word every round, lengths from 4 to 9 letters, hard mode, stats and a win streak.

The daily puzzle on UK time

The six daily puzzles change at midnight in New York, which is 5 a.m. in the UK for most of the year, so a new word is waiting when you wake up. Daily words use spellings that are the same in Britain and America, so everyone plays the same puzzle wherever they are. Once you have played here, British spelling stays on for the other infinite pages; you can change it any time in Settings (the gear button).
