A longer daily challenge: eight letters, seven guesses, one new word every midnight Eastern Time.
The long-word daily
Eight-letter words are built like Lego: foot + print, re + fresh, enjoy + ment. The daily eight-letter puzzle rewards spotting those pieces. You get seven guesses, one more than in the shorter games, and you will usually need fewer than you think: after one good guess, only a handful of answers still fit.
A new word appears at midnight Eastern Time and is the same for every player until the next one. Your streak grows with every day you solve it. The daily words come from a fixed list of 2,029 common eight-letter words, and past puzzles live in the 8-letter archive.
Where to start
Our computation over the answer list ranks DOCTRINE, CANISTER, RELATION, SEDATION, SOCIETAL as the strongest everyday openers; DOCTRINE leaves about 4.5 candidates on average. After that, think in chunks: -MENT, -NESS, -TION and -ABLE cover a lot of ground, and a green block in the middle often marks the seam of a compound word.
Need a nudge? Today's hints cover the eight-letter puzzle too. Want to train? Infinite 8 letters has no limit.
